Living tips for Foreigners in Taiwan: 11 things you should know

Taiwan is renowned for its exceptional convenience, with nearly every aspect of daily life meticulously organized for your comfort. However, you may not yet be aware of all the conveniences it offers. In this guide, we aim to provide you with some valuable tips and insights, particularly if you are a long-term resident. Here are some Living Tips for Foreigners in Taiwan:

1. Chinese name

Obtaining a Chinese name is strongly advised. Having a Chinese name can greatly enhance your communication with locals and in various situations. When you require services, it simplifies the process for the service providers.

2. Bank account & Stamp

Opening a bank account as an international student can be a bit challenging since most banks are not very willing to provide services to non-local residents. However, you can easily overcome this obstacle by holding accounts with at least two banks simultaneously. We recommend starting with the Chunghwa Post bank, which is the most popular banking service in Taiwan. Whether it's for your salary, scholarships, or any other financial transactions, having a Post bank account can be essential. They are very accommodating and happy to assist you in opening an account as long as you are a legal resident of the country.

Another great option is the Taiwan bank, which is renowned and highly regarded throughout Taiwan. This bank is also open to helping you establish an account and is known for its widespread ATM network.

To get started, all you need to do is remember to bring your passport, Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), around 1000NT in cash, and a stamp for your signature. You can easily obtain a stamp by visiting a nearby stamp store and showing them your Chinese name. There are various options for stamp bodies, but the simplest and most affordable one should suffice. This process only takes a few minutes, making it quite convenient. Try to carry your stamp wherever you go.

3. Easy card

Originally designed for use on various public transportation services including train, Metro (MRT) buses and rental bicycles, this payment method has evolved to encompass a wide array of businesses. It has also extended its application to encompass convenience stores, department stores, supermarkets, taxis, and various other retail establishments.

International students have the option to utilize their student ID as an Easy Card, typically offering them free bus fares as a benefit.

4. Membership cards

A significant number of foreigners are not aware that they can receive advantages by enrolling in a membership program. For instance, when you make a purchase at convenience stores, they typically inquire about your membership status. You can simply express your intention to become a member. After your registration, you can accrue points by providing your phone number, or you can choose to download the app and have them scan the barcode. It's important to note that this membership service is not limited to convenience stores; it's also offered at PX Mart, Carrefour malls, and various other shopping centers.

5. Convenient stores

In addition to buying essential items and dining, these establishments offer services like EasyCard top-ups, bill payments, print documents, call taxi and package sending or receiving. Some even have restroom facilities. Given Taiwan's predominantly warm climate, you can also take a break here and enjoy a cooler ambiance. Convenience stores truly live up to their name. Seven eleven, Family mart, My life, Ok mart.... you name it!

6. Online shopping

Occasionally, you may encounter product shortages in physical markets. In such situations, you can turn to online stores for a solution. Some of the most popular options include Shopee, Momo, and PCstore, all of which offer a wide range of products. Additionally, you have a variety of delivery services to choose from. When using Shopee, it's a good idea to opt for the "Shopee store (蝦皮店到店)" to reduce your delivery costs. If there isn't one nearby, you can select an alternative delivery service. You also have the option to order frozen products for an additional fee. Therefore, it's recommended to place larger orders to save on delivery charges. Don't forget to retrieve your items before the deadline once they have already arrived .

7. Courier service

Courier services are an indispensable part of life in Taiwan, and they play a crucial role in the daily routines of its residents. When you order products from online stores, you have the flexibility to choose from a variety of delivery services, including the post office, Yamato, and convenient stores. If you opt for the post office or Yamato, it's necessary for you to be present at home and keep your phone within reach when your delivery is expected. In the event that you miss the arrival of a post office delivery, your package will be held at the nearest post office for a few days. If you still don't retrieve it during that time, your items will be returned to the sender.

On the other hand, if your items are delivered to a convenient store, they will notify you once they have arrived. The advantage here is that you don't need to be at home; you can simply visit the store and collect your items at your convenience before the specified deadline.

8. Call Uber

As previously noted, you have the ability to summon a taxi through a convenience store. Another choice is Uber, provided you have the Uber app installed. Uber, as you may be aware, offers a wider range of vehicles, including luxury, eco-friendly, big boots cars, in addition to competitive pricing. It also offers the convenience of delivering your documents or other items to their intended recipients.

Uber's services extend beyond just taxis; you can also make use of the Uber Eats app to order products from markets or food and beverages from restaurants and drink shops. If you adhere to a vegan diet, you can easily filter the menu to select vegan options. Furthermore, Uber One service reduces delivery fees, making it a recommended option for frequent shoppers.

9. Navigation

Google map, or Google chrome will help you to navigate the destination you're looking for. It will help you to find transportation options to arrive at the location. If you're a vegan, simply search by the keyword 'vegan' or '素食' P.S. Numerous vegan and vegetarian restaurants are available throughout the country. However, it's essential to thoroughly check the ingredients since many vegetarian establishments incorporate eggs or milk into their menu items.

10. Transportation

Taiwan offers a diverse array of transportation options, which encompass rental bikes, buses, taxis, slow and fast trains, high-speed trains, and metro services. Simply input your destination, and you can easily determine which mode of transportation will take you there. Additionally, you have the convenience of utilizing railway apps and bus apps to access schedules. Payment can be made with your EasyCard, or you can opt to purchase tickets as needed.

11. Health service

If you've been in the country for six months, it's mandatory to enroll in the national health insurance program. Once you're enrolled, we advise you to make regular use of healthcare services. Taiwan is well-known for its healthcare offerings, which encompass health check-ups, dental care, and more. The government covers the service costs, and your only expense is the registration fee at the front desk. When you visit a clinic for the first time, you'll be asked to complete a form, including a question about your dietary preferences, specifically whether you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet. Please ensure you provide accurate information, as this detail may influence the medications prescribed by a physician. We strongly encourage you to consider visiting a traditional Chinese clinic. These physicians can assess your overall health and provide treatments such as acupuncture, massage, and traditional Chinese medicine if necessary. These clinics are widespread and easily accessible. It's crucial to carry your insurance card with you at all times, just in case it's needed.
